93 KK dengue cases but lower than last year
Kota Kinabalu: There have been 93 new cases of dengue fever detected in the city since January.According to Kota Kinabalu Health Officer Dr Jiloris @ Julian Frederic Dony this is a reduction compared to the same period last year.

"The most important thing is there are no deaths reported in the city area. This is due to the cooperation and commitment of the Mayor and local community leaders which has led to a reduction of at least 60 per cent compared to the number of cases last year for the same period.

"As such we will continue our efforts to work together with the Village Security and Development Committees in the district to counter the disease," he said, during a Chinese New Year celebration 2016 cum Comdez dengue advocacy and district level Public Sector Conducive Ecosystem (Eksa) event at the Inanam Health Clinic, Friday.

Jiloris said the "Community Dengue Zero" (Comdez) campaign launching was part of efforts by the Kota Kinabalu Health Office together with the community to counter the increasing number of cases of dengue fever in the city.

Adding that dengue fever can be fatal, he said, the department was also increasing efforts including more fogging activities. But, it was also the responsibility of the public and community to cooperate in stopping the spread.

"Fogging will only kill the adult mosquitos and not the larvae. Hence the best way is still for the public and villagers to destroy the breeding areas which can be carried out during gotong royong activities.

"People should also take precautionary measures to avoid being bitten including wearing long sleeves, applying repellent, aerosol sprays, cleaning their home and compound areas of breeding areas and avoid going outdoors in the early morning and late evenings."

He said it is hoped that via the Comdez programme the awareness about the importance of cooperation to counter the spread of dengue can also be instilled in the public.

"We hope initiatives such as these can be continued so that dengue cases can be reduced and most importantly that deaths due to dengue are avoided."

He added that currently there were six dengue hotspots which include Taman Mei Lok, Taman Cantek, Jalan Pahlawan, Kg Kepayan and Kg Kopungit Block C in Petagas, Taman Sri Baru, Darat Manggatal.

During the event anti dengue kits were also distributed to district village representatives and a Chinese New Year Lion dance performance was also held.
