Penampang: Plans are afoot to develop the 60-acre Kota Kinabalu wetlands as well as its bird sanctuary near Likas Bay into another huge community park for the public in the city area.Sabah Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Shareda) President Datuk Francis Goh said the proposed development has been sealed between Sabah Wetlands Conservation Society (SWCS) and Shareda in a win-win partnership.

"The masterplan for the project would be prepared by the SWCS as I believe the organisation would be more concerned and also on the know-how on conserving and safeguarding the natural environment.

"Hence the issue of disturbing or negatively impacting the natural environment at the wetlands would not arise and the project would be sponsored by Shareda as part of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) to the people in Sabah.

"The wetlands lands and the bird sanctuary area would be equipped with jogging tracks, restaurants, pavilion, traditional structures to attract people to do leisure walks or jogs at the park," he said.

Goh who is also MCA Sabah Deputy Chief cum MCA Penampang Chief, said this to reporters at a Chinese New Year celebration at the residence of Kobusak Residents Association Chairman David Chong at Taman Everclicked, Saturday.

The programme was part of MCA Sabah and MCA Penampang to be closer to the people, especially to the residents in Kapayan area. This year, there will be seven similar programmes to be carried out in villages and residential areas.

Through the project, Goh said the existing Likas Lagoon would be enhanced and connected with the existing Likas Bay that would uplift the image of Kota Kinabalu as a liveable and comfortable city to stay and live in.

"We have met new Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai and I find he is a very positive man as before he was appointed to the post, he had been leading his own programmes towards enhancing the city's image.

"Shareda will give full support…and we have talked to him (Yeo) so that City Hall could be the partner with SWCS to develop the 60-acre wetlands and bird sanctuary as the biggest public park after Tun Fuad Stephen Park in Bukit Padang," he said.

Goh said Shareda has 189 members and they will make this project a reality in a year.

At the same time, he said Shareda has also discussed with Yeo to beautify the seashore from Sutera Harbour Resort up to the Sabah Administration Complex in Likas which is under construction.

Under this effort, he proposed a beach boulevard over 12 kilometres that could be the longest in South East Asia where city dwellers and residents could cycle or walk from Tanjung Aru beach to Likas.
