Kota Kinabalu: In an effort to create a cleaner and greener place to live in, City Hall is looking into the possibility of organising a car-free day programme just like the one held by Kuala Lumpur City Hall.Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai said there are many quarters that encourage City Hall to organise such programme.

"But at the moment, we are facing a little bit of traffic jam here, so we have to evaluate the situation.

"I will speak to the Minister who is overseeing us (City Hall), Datuk Edward Yong (Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister), but we are also directly under the Chief Minister's Department.

"We need to prepare a proper paper before we could close the road on a specific day.

"I will submit the paper to the Chief Minister and let him look at the pros and cons before we close the road," Yeo said at the 2016 Unitar-Sidma Charity Run.

The KL Car Free Morning (KLCFM) is held every first and third Sunday of each month with cycling, jogging, walking and even skating on major streets of Kuala Lumpur Golden Triangle.

KLCFM was initially held once a month before it was organised twice a month, a year later due to popular demand.

In the city, currently the left lane of the road leading to Anjung Selera from Sabah Trade Centre is closed to traffic every first Sunday of a month for the Sunday Family Ride (SFR) programme.

The SFR aims to promote interaction among families and communities and also to encourage the people to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

As such, Yeo urged the people, especially city folk, to grab the opportunity to participate in the healthy activity.

"We have shifted the time to 5am-9am, so those who go to church at 9am or 10am could come around 5am or 6am.

"On that particular Sunday, there will be more security personnel, especially from City Hall, so it's going to be safe," he said.

On the charity run, Yeo said, more than 2,000 runners took part, some even from abroad.

"City Hall is involved in this charity run to stimulate the society at large to be involved in charity works.

They contribute to charity bodies and the money will be used for the orphans and the less fortunate people."

At the same time, the charity run is a healthy activity, especially for youths, he said.

Meanwhile, Yeo said phase two of the pedestrian walkway and cycleway project from Tanjung Aru to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is progressing smoothly.

"Now we are extending the phase two from Wawasan Plaza, Imago area to Tanjung Aru town…and then from Tanjung Aru town to Tanjung Aru beach.

"Phase one was supposed to be from the Sabah Ports to the bridge near the Yayasan Sabah building but as there is a development at the area currently, we started the construction from Sabah Ports to the roundabout near Wisma Perindustrian.

"But once the project comes into completion, we will extend it a little bit more from the roundabout near Wisma Perindustrian to the roundabout near Wisma Perkasa," he said.

The project is part of the city's Environment Project which aims at making the city a comfortable place for visitors and funded by the Federal Government through Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (Sedia).
