Kota Belud: The Bazar Rakyat (People's Bazaar) is set to become another landmark in the town of Kota Belud when it is completed by 2018, said Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan. He said the bazaar, costing RM19 million, was intended to provide a conducive and comfortable place for traders, as well as to boost the economy of local residents.

He said the three-storey bazaar would also accommodate a wet market.

"Bazar Rakyat will be a complete market, which is well organised and will be able to accommodate traders in the area," he said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the project here, Saturday.

Abdul Rahman assured the people that the needs of the local community in Kota Belud would continue to be his priority to bring Kota Belud to be on par with other developed districts in the state.

Met by reporters after the ceremony, Abdul Rahman said the construction of the bazaar was part of the Government's efforts to uplift the image of Kota Belud.

He hoped the bazaar would become one of the tourist attractions in Kota Belud.

In another development, Abdul Rahman said the ministry would launch the Local Authorities Transformation Programme in May with the aim of making local authorities more transparent, holistic and inclusive.

He said the ministry would hold meetings with the state governments to create common guidelines and actions for the purpose.

At the event on Saturday, Abdul Rahman also presented an allocation warrant of RM60 million to the Sabah Local Government and Housing Ministry, as well as contributions and annual grants, totalling RM34.7 million and RM35.9 million respectively, to local authorities in Sabah.
