SMK Bandaraya crowned overall champions

Kota Kinabalu: SMK Bandaraya emerged overall champions in the 2016 State Senior Karate Championship which concluded on Sunday at the Likas Sports Complex.The team managed to collect a total of three gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze medal in the two-day tournament.

The gold medals came from Audrey Japyus through the Women's Kumite +68kg, Calista Hana Hiew (Women's Kumite -45kg) and Fernylla Japyus (Women's Kumite -68kg).

In the 2016 State Secondary School Karate Champonship, Sabah Karate Association (SKA) Penampang Branch topped the medal standings with nine gold medals, four silver medals and 11 bronze medals.

The contributors for the team's gold medals were Farrah Lourdes A in the Women's Cadet Individual Kata, Eldrich Aaron (Men's Individual Kata Extra and Men's Kumite +45kg Extra), Lovelly Anne (Women's Individual Kata Extra and Women's Kumite -40kg Extra), Anya Aswald (Women's Kumite +45kg Extra), Arthuric Gideon (Men's Junior Kumite +68kg), Nicklaus George (Men's Kumite -40kg Extra) and Natasha Dyane (Women's Kumite -45kg Extra).

The championship witnessed a participation of 350 exponents from 28 teams.

Among the teams that took part in the competition were the Main Dojo, Sarawak Karate Association, SKA Papar, SKA Tambunan, St John Tawau, PDRM, Sukma team, Iran, SKA Tenom, Lahad Datu, Kinabatangan, SMK Tansau Penampang, SM St Peter Telipok, SKA Keningau, SKA Tamparuli, Shitokai Sabah, SKA Sipitang, SKA Kota Kinabalu, SRK St Aloysius, SMT Karate Club, SKA Papar, SMK Kemabong, SK St Teresa Penampang, SM St Michael Penampang, SKA Tuaran and SK St Paul Penampang.

Meanwhile, in a speech, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan hoped the State karate team for the 18th Sukma will achieve more than just the initial target of two gold medals in the Games.

"Karate is one of the sports that will be participated by the State contingent in the coming 18th Sukma in Sarawak on July.

"The State Sports Council had also hired a foreign coach from Iran, Reza Azizi to further strengthen the team's preparation.

"I hope the local athletes and coaches will make full use of Reza's services who has been with us since August last year," he said in a speech read by State Sports Board Chairman Datuk Louis Rampas during the closing ceremony.

Tawfiq also welcomed the effort and development programmes conducted by SKA to unearth new talents and uplift the standards of the sports in the State.

Also present was SKA President Datuk Seri Wilfred Bumburing.
