Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) is optimistic the meeting between airlines operators and the Ministry of Transportation Tuesday to discuss the proposed hike in fee charges by the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) will be fruitful.MAB Chief Commercial Officer Paul Simmons hoped the outcome of the meeting would be moderated to prevent any future consequences to airline operations.

"We don't want to comment further on this as negotiations are still ongoing with the government and we're putting our case across.

"It is not a done deal and if it's unmoderated then it would have consequences (particularly on the partnership)," he said after signing a two-year partnership with the Sarawak Tourism Board and Ministry of Tourism to sponsor the Borneo Jazz and Rainforest World Music Festival for 2016 and 2017.

Paul said if the proposed hike becomes a reality, the increase would be too heavy for MAB to absorb, and this could result in higher fares.

The DCA, on Monday, justified its proposal to increase airline operator fees by ten-fold by saying that it was necessary in order to transform the federal agency into a proper authority. – Bernama
