Kota Kinabalu: Sabah finished third overall in the Johor International Weightlifting Championship that ended at Segamat hall in Johor, Tuesday. The team failed to win any medals on the final day and with two gold, three silver and two bronze medals they had won earlier, they finished behind overall champion Putrajaya who won three gold, two silver and one bronze medals and second place Selangor who won three gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

Sabah's two golds were delivered on Monday through women lifters Marceeta Marlyn Marcus in the 58kg and Frenceay Titus in the 63kg category.

The three silvers came from Cliff Howard Jamadin in the men's 85kg, Calixtus Daunis in the men's 62kg and Rony Jesos in the men's 56kg while Welma Marie John and Elvin Elvester delivered the bronze medals in the women's 53kg and men's 77kg categories.

Sabah Weightlifting Association President Philip Gisan said he was pleased with the performance of the team, especially from the Sukma athletes.

"With stiff competition from national athletes as well as those from Thailand and Indonesia in the competition, I hope our young athletes will learn from the experience and train harder," he said.

The state contingent consisting 12 athletes was led by team managers Romulo Sulit and Kimpin Mudin with Stephen Gompion, Cornelius and Nicholas Wong as coaches while Adam Lamau and Lawrance Bell are referees.
