Kota Kinabalu: Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu has set up a new Centre for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery.Bariatric surgery aims to induce weight loss in morbidly obese patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeding 35 kg/m2 and to change their body's metabolism for prolonging a healthier quality life without ailments (see pic) associated with obesity.

The hospital has already been offering screening, counselling and surgery for overweight or obese patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus since last year. Enquiry: 088-518880 / 518882.

Diabetic surgery is performed to induce remission of overweight or obese patients with Type 2 Diabetes while inducing weight loss to normal or ideal body weight.

The result of recent long term studies has shown it to be superior and sustainable compared to intensive medical therapy in diabetes remission.

The hospital plans to put together a multi-disciplinary team comprising a bariatric and metabolic surgeon, a family physician, a dietician, a fitness coach, a paediatrician for childhood obesity and subsequently a psychologist, to provide one-stop access to the treatment and prevention of this increasingly prevalent lifestyle disease.

Obesity and overweight has become the new pandemic affecting developed and developing countries worldwide.

In Malaysia, about 45 per cent of the population is overweight or obese, one of the highest in Asia and the highest in Southeast Asia.

The Centre for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery will provide minimally invasive or laparoscopic procedures such as Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Adjustable Band Gastric Plication, Sleeve Plus procedures and endoscopic balloons, shared Consultant General Surgeon Dr Chan Khan Wei, who is the Minimal Access Surgeon and Bariatric & Metabolic Surgeon at Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu, at a welcome dinner hosted by the hospital for delegates of the Asia Pacific Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Society (APMBSS) Congress.

More importantly, such surgery will dramatically reduce co-morbidities like diabetes mellitus, hypertension and fatty liver; and therefore increase lifespan in morbid obesity.

The dinner was graced by Professor Dr Chin Kin Fah, Chairman of APMBSS and Resident Consultant Surgeon of Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur and Professor Dr Huang Chih-Kun from Taiwan, one of the most prominent pioneer bariatric surgeons in Asia and the mentor of Dr Chan Khan Wei who has performed the first mini-gastric bypass in Sabah for severe morbid obesity.

Jean-Francois Naa, Chief Executive Officer of Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu, said: "We are excited to expand our range of medical services with this new Centre for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery.

This furthers our aspiration of making Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu a leading hospital in the region and a referral centre for local and international patients seeking quality medical care at competitive pricing."

Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu will mark its first year anniversary next month.
