121 made homeless in S'kan

Sandakan: A total of 121 people were made homeless when five blocks of workers' quarters at a timber factory along Mile 11 here, were destroyed in a fire early Friday. District Fire and Rescue Department Station Chief Mohd Razali Awang Ahmad said three fire engines manned by 13 personnel brought the fire under control at about 2am. "The fire was brought under control before it spread to another block where 51 female workers stayed," he said. ADVERTISEMENT The operations ended at about 5.59am with nobody reported hurt. A team of 13 firefighters on three fire engines rushed to the location, six kilometres away at 11.23pm and arrived at 11.46pm, after the public spotted smoke.However, District Fire and Rescue Department Deputy Chief Faisal Ahmad said it was steam caused by an overheated boiler, which had gone up the extraction flue. The team left the premises at 12.47am after ensuring everything was safe.
