Five government leaders from Asia-Pacific countries graced the occasion as guests of honour.

They were Malaysian Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah, Deputy Minister of Finance, Datuk Chua Tee Yong, Vice-Chairman of Commission on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, Media and Information, Kingdom of Cambodia, His Excellency Senator Chhit Kim Yeat, Senator and Member of Commission on Economy, Finance and Banking, Kingdom f Cambodia, Her Excellency Senator Dr Keo Maly and Sabah State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker, Datuk Dr Johnson Tee.

Officiating at the event, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah said the Asia-Pacific International Honesty Enterprise-Keris Award has been acclaimed as the International Business "Oscar" Award by China Central Television (CCTV).

According to him, for the past 13 years, more than 600 outstanding companies and entrepreneurs in the Asia-Pacific region have been awarded for having put honesty, ethics and integrity in their business and corporate practices.

Dr Abu Bakar noted that past winners included world-renowned, well-respected, honest and reputable corporations such as Canon, Aeon Jusco, Samsung, Panasonic, China Southern Airline, Lee Kum Kee, LG, Haier, FedEx, Public Bank, Prudential and many others.

"This year's winners have also gone through a stringent selection process. The Keris Award is very meaningful as it recognises companies and enterprises which have demonstrated honesty and integrity in their business modus operandi.

"It signifies the integral importance of honesty as a business practice. This will encourage honest operations and subsequently set an honesty model for our society," he said.

Sabah State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker, Datuk Dr Johnson Tee, who graced the Winners Meeting, stressed that the 2008 financial crisis that started in the United States and Europe has taught us a lesson.

"At this crucial moment, you will notice that honesty is really the hand that is capable of getting the ball rolling – the ball of our global financial system. This financial tsunami has taken place due to the dishonest dealings in second-level mortgage a few years ago in the US which in turn led to the collapse of trust and confidence in the financial system and the resulting dominoes effect.

"The entire world, unfortunately, has to endure this calamity. We are all suffering from collateral damages," he remarked.

From Dr Tee's observation, companies and entrepreneurs often place their emphasis on making money, thus often forgetting the cultivation of the culture of honesty.

"If that is the case, can such an enterprise go far?" he asked. "Honesty is the basic of an enterprise.

Honesty is so very vital in doing business. Some century-old enterprises, and many world-famous brand names can last generation after generation simply because they built their foundation solidly on Honesty."

Dr Tee also commended the Organising Chairman Prof Dr Albert Tan for his farsightedness in initiating the Award since 2002 way before the crisis.

"The International Committee (Asia-Pacific Top Excellence Brand Committee) under his leadership have been involved in the promotion of honesty and integrity entrepreneurial spirit for the past 14 years, and set a good example for the business community," he observed.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Top Excellence Brand Committee cum Organising Chairman, Prof Dr Albert Tan said the Asia-Pacific International Honesty Enterprise-Keris Award is highly regarded one of the largest, most prestigious and recognised, and creditable international business awards in the business history of the Asia-Pacific region.

"We are the only one that is organised by an international organisation with representatives from 10 countries and nominees from more than 13 countries in the region.

"It has been most heartening to witness the growth of Honesty Award-winning companies over the past 13 years as many began with humble beginnings and are now renowned and respected brands and corporations around the world.

Some have even gone into public-listing," he said.

The occasion also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Italian Chamber of Commerce (ConfcommercioPisa) led by Antonio Spinello as its President, and the Asia-Pacific Top Excellence Brand Committee chaired by Prof Dr Albert Tan.
