20 new combat boats for Sabah waters

Kuala Lumpur: The Armed Forces on Wednesday officially received 20 new combat boats to be used in safeguarding Malaysian waters off Sabah.The maritime interceptors of Stingray and Viper models were handed over to Armed Forces Chief Gen.

Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin by MRI Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd in a symbolic ceremony during the Defence Services Asia Exhibition 2016 (DSA 2016) at the Putra World Trade Centre, here.

Zulkifeli said the boats, in addition to its maritime assets for "Op Pasir" under the Joint Force command, were procured in a RM20 million "government operate, company own and maintain" (Gocom) contract.

He said the new assets will mainly play the role of intercepting possible maritime surface threats, and will be based at strategic areas in Malaysian waters off Sabah, including the Joint Force's sea-bases.

Among the other locations that the Stingray and Viper will see action are Sandakan and Semporna.

Both models are capable of carrying a maximum of 10 personnel, or 1,500 kilogrammes load, onboard; and equipped with 250-horsepower engines each, radar system, echo founder as well as state-of-the-art communication system.

The handover ceremony was witnessed by the Defence Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Mohamad Radzi.
