Kuala Lumpur: A petition has been launched to pressure Putrajaya into expediting the release of four Malaysians kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf militants off Sabah. The online petition on ipetitions.com also called for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's personal intervention.

"We hope to get 10,000 signatures for our petition to be handed to our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, with the hope that his personal intervention will help secure the freedom of the hostages," said the petition titled "Save our Malaysian hostages. Bring them home". The petition posted on April 17 has gathered 450 signatories so far.

On April 1, four Sarawakians — Wong Teck Kang, 31, Wong Hung Sing, 34, Wong Teck Chii, 29, and Johnny Lau Jung Hien, 21 — were abducted by gunmen in the waters off Ligitan Island in Sabah It was reported on Thursday that the petition was created by the brother of Sarawakian Bernard Then, who was beheaded by Abu Sayyaf last year.

Christopher Then reportedly pleaded to all Malaysians to support the petition to prevent a repeat of what happened to his brother last November 17.

"My brother, Bernard Then, was murdered by these same terrorists who kill innocent victims in the name of God.

Let us NOT have any more deaths in their hands,' he was quoted saying. Then also appealed to Najib and Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem to take the case more seriously.
