PETALING JAYA: The only reason Umno entered Sabah in 1994 was because the State's Barisan Nasional component parties had acted to sabotage the ruling coalition by leaving it before the election, says Datuk Bung Moktar Radin.Commenting on the statement by Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem that Umno entered Sabah because the State BN was weak, Bung Moktar said it was possible that Adenan had not meant what he said.Bung, an Umno Supreme Council member, said, however, that what happened then was a blessing in disguise as Sabah BN was now one of the strongest in the country.

The Kinabatangan MP further stressed that Umno did not intend to bully its fellow component parties in Sarawak, hence there was no need for anyone in the State to worry as the Malay party had decided against opening any branches there."We have allies in Sarawak we can trust, so there is no need for Umno to set foot in Sarawak. As the backbone of the BN, Umno believes in being pragmatic, so it is unlikely that we will bully other component parties."There is no need for Adenan to resign, because Umno has no desire to enter Sarawak," Bung reiterated, responding to Adenan's threat to resign as CM should Umno ever open a branch in the State.Adenan, who is PBB President, said there was no need for the Malay nationalist party in Sarawak as the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition was already well represented there.

"As long as I am the Chief Minister, they will not come here. If they do come here and set up their branches, I will resign," he said. Adenan has been reiterating his pledge to keep the hornbill state free of Umno as Sarawak heads to the polls May 7, which is seeing a steady influx of politicians from the BN's biggest party nationally.
