Kota Kinabalu: The Government has plans to relocate the people who are squatting on the historical island of Pulau Gaya, off the State Capital, in stages in Telipok and Kinarut.Luyang Assemblyman Hiew King Cheu who raised this question in the the State Assembly earlier this week, said government agencies are currently updating details of houses, identities and family backgrounds.Pulau Gaya is where the Chartered Administration first set up a base following the failed attempt at Pulau Balambangan due to its remoteness. ADVERTISEMENT After a raid on the settlement by Mat Salleh, the administration decided to establish a base on the mainland in the late 1890s, which later grew into Jesselton and was renamed Kota Kinabalu in 1967.He said the Government is deciding where to relocate them. He also posed the question with regard to measures the Government had been taking to stop rubbish from being thrown into the sea and swept away to the city shorelines. He noted that City Hall had been taking various efforts since 2011 from beach cleaning to organising the Program Kasih Sayang Pulau Gaya to campaign for cleanliness while at the same time address the rubbish throwing problem.ADVERTISEMENT However, Hiew lamented that all those efforts proved fruitless as rubbish kept getting washed to the city's shorelines.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
