Kuching: July 22 has been declared a public holiday in Sarawak, to commemorate the state's independence from British rule.Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem made the announcement while officiating at the grand finale of the programme, 'Sejiwa Senada 2016' at Matang@Metro City here, Saturday.

The public holiday will be implemented this year. "It is to acknowledge the struggles of our past leaders," said Adenan.

Adenan said the staunch support of the people in Sarawak, to be translated into a major victory for Barisan Nasional (BN) in the state election next month would enable him to continue fighting for their interest.

"I'm the chief minister for Sarawak. I will fight for you...always. But you must fight for me also.

You must give me a big mandate. I need five more years, two years is not enough. There are so many things to do," he said.

Adenan, who became Sarawak Chief Minister in 2014 said he would use the next five years to implement various development plans for the state.

"I am not crazy for power or position. I have been a federal minister, state minister, member of parliament, assemblyman and now chief minister.

"Now I'm 72, in five years I'll be 77. I don't want to be a senile chief minister...but give me that mandate so that we can (continue to) develop Sarawak," he said.

Also present were his wife, Puan Sri Jamilah Anu, Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and state Housing and Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Sejiwa Senada programme which kicked off in Miri last Jan 8, is aimed at creating greater rapport between government agencies and the public with the highlights being held today and tomorrow.

The programme held at nine locations before this, drew about 1.13 million visitors.
