Kota Kinabalu: Businesswomen and entrepreneurs in Sabah must explore the economic opportunities that abound between Sabah and Indonesia now and in the future.Consul for Economic Affairs Hendro Retno Wulan at the Consulate-General of The Republic of Indonesia in Kota Kinabalu made the call during her inaugural informal business networking and luncheon with some 40 women entrepreneurs and professionals from Sabah at the Zara's Boutique Hotel, Monday.

The participants were mainly from the Sabah Women Entrepreneurs & Professionals Association (Swepa) and Rotary Club of KK Pearl.

"I received my official assignment in August last year. Today's gathering is my initiative to meet businesswomen and women entrepreneurs in Sabah. They must have the courage to expand their business opportunities beyond the State.

"There is great potential in terms of business and investment opportunities between Sabah and Indonesia from the trade, import and export perspectives, in the field of manufacturing and skills training, among other aspects," she said.

Wulan expressed her appreciation to the hotel's Managing Director Eliza Goh for making the fruitful meeting possible.

Among those present were Chairperson of YBS Tenaga Sdn Bhd, Datuk Aminah Ambrose, businesswoman Datuk Zahra Ismail, General Manager of Palace Hotel, Phang Joo See, Managing Director of Joe Sun (Good Morning) Café, Datin Annie Chee, Managing Director of Rock Safe, Yvonne Yap, Director of Chanteek Borneo Gallery, Annie Antah, Director of Distinctone Sdn Bhd, Dr Janet Lee, Image Consultant Doris Lim, Insurance Specialist Eva Susau, Professional Baker Sylma Jepin, President of Swepa, Wynnie Jong and Vice-President of Rotary Club of KK Pearl, Datuk Suzannah Liaw.

Contrary to what she had heard about Sabah women, Wulan found them to be dynamic, amiable and ready to interact, saying she was impressed with their communicative competence. "Although we met for the first time, we were able to exchange notes as if we have known each other for years. It really makes a lot of difference," she told reporters.

The Consul urged them to take advantage of the 1st Indonesia-Malaysia Investment Forum which will be held this Friday (April 29) at the Pullman Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

According to her, the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur in collaboration with the Investment Coordinating Board of the Republic of Indonesia (BKPM) is organising the event followed by a One-on-One Investment Clinic to facilitate companies which are interested to expand their businesses in Indonesia.

"Participants have an opportunity to interact directly with top officials from the relevant Indonesian Ministries will disseminate information on the updated foreign direct investment (FDI) policies and regulations as well as promote the potential projects," she said.

Wulan also took the opportunity to promote the 31st Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) with the catch phrase 'Trade with Remarkable Indonesia' and scheduled to be held in Jakarta from Oct 12 to 16 this year.

She said the Expo will feature five product zones, namely Manufactured Goods and Services, Furniture & Furnishings, Food & Beverages, Fashion, Lifestyle and Creative Products, and Premium SMEs' Products from Indonesia's Provinces.

"This Expo aims to promote quality 'Made-in-Indonesia' products and services in the global market, to better develop business and investment networking, and to enhance potentials and opportunities, particularly for those seeking business ventures and investments in Indonesia's manufacturing sector," she explained.

This annual largest B2B (Business-to-Business) is organised by the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Marine and Fisheries, Ministry of Cooperatives & SMEs, and also the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board.
