Fathin to spearhead Sabah's challenge

Kota Kinabalu: SEA Games bronze medallist Fathin Faqihah Mohd Yusuf will spearhead Sabah's challenge in the 18th Sukma Games in Kuching, Sarawak from July 26-29.The Tawau lass was among the 36 names released by Sabah Athletics Association's (SAA) secretary Francis Shim on Tuesday and she will be taking part in all the sprint events as well as anchoring the women 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

"The Sabah Athletics Association and State Sports Council have selected a total of 36 athletes for the 18th Sukma Games in Kuching, Sarawak, and there are 20 male and 16 female athletes from throughout Sabah.

"The most notable athlete is Fathin Faqihah Mohd Yusuf from Tawau who won Sea Games bronze medal in the 4x400m relay and she will be taking part in all the sprint events and will be anchoring the female 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

"Another one to watch is JI Fedeliah Jaimin from Kota Marudu who won silver medal in hepthatlon in the last Sukma and hopefully she can do one better in Kuching.

"Our double gold medallist in the last Sukma in Kangar, Perlis, Salesnella Gabi will be defending her 3000m steeple chase and 5000m while another newcomer, Karmantina Quadra will be one to watch in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles," said Francis.

As for the boys, he said the association is banking on Paul Kenneth Tay who came 4th in shot put in the last Sukma to deliver in Kuching and Arthur Aron who also came 4th in the last Sukma will be ranked among the best runners in the 400m hurdles.

"Another newcomer, Andre Anura who did 7.12m in the triple jump and won silver medal in the just concluded SEA Youth Athletics Competition in Thailand will be one to watch, and also our in-form javelin thrower, Bryan Deron Dahreen who did 56.27m may be able to spring a surprise too.

"As always in all previous Sukmas, our boys and girls relay teams of 4x100m and 4x400m will always feature well in the finals and I hope they will do good again this time," he added.

Meanwhile, the manager for the team this year is SAA President Fred Gabriel while the coaches are Dzulfikar Awang Anak, Aron Uthard @ Utad Keningau, Raafi, Linus Nicholas and May Chong as chaperone.
