Wildlife Dept vows action
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Wildlife Department said action would be taken against those behind the trade of bush meat at a Nabawan tamu last weekend. Its Deputy Director Augustine Tuuga said they are now in the midst of carrying out the investigation and will soon be making a move to curb such bush meat trade in the area.

"Yes, we are doing something. When and how, we can't elaborate it now in detail as it might jeopardise our cover," he said.

On Monday, the Daily Express received several photos believed that of bush meat trade carried out at the tamu in Nabawan early Saturday morning.

This included images of several slaughtered threatened species like the Sambar deer.

This came in the wake of a freeze on new hunting licences announced by the department on March 28 following the hot spell brought by the El Nino phenomenon.

Its Director William Baya said the freeze is a precaution to reduce the occurrence of forest fire that will threaten and destroy the forest and wildlife.

"The chances of forest fires increase with the presence of human activity in the forest, for example hunting," he said.

The freeze has not been lifted yet.

Prior to the freeze, hunting licences were only given for the short term of around one week, requiring hunters to renew each time they set out for game.

But observers familiar with the tamu in Nabawan believe the wildlife were killed by illegal hunters from the area.

A dialogue was held on March 2 involving 200 residents with the panel members consisting of the Wildlife Department, WWF-Malaysia as well members of the Sabah and Sarawak High Court, among others, touching on poaching of wildlife.
