Sabahan student tops in Cambridge's German language exam

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah student Jeremy Mah Zhee Kein, 19, grabbed news headlines when he emerged top in Malaysia for Cambridge International AS Level German Language in the A Level examination in November 2015.It was a double success as he obtained Straight 4As (including German Language) in the examination, the others being Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

For this, the old boy of SM All Saints earned two accolades – Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards, Malaysia, which certified that he gained the highest mark in Malaysia for Cambridge International AS Level German Language, and Certificate of Achievement in recognition of Outstanding Performance in the Cambridge International Examination 2016.

On completion of SPM in 2013, Jeremy enrolled for the German A-Level Preparatory Programme (GAPP) at the German-Malaysia Institute (GMI) in Kajang, Selangor in July 2014.

During this period, Jeremy, who has a flair for languages, studied for the Cambridge International AS Level German Language.

Born in Sandakan, he is the second son of Dr Lawrence Mah Hon Kheong (State Health Department's Senior Principal Assistant Director (Oral Health) and Ho Wai Ching, both dentists. He aspires to be an engineer.

Recently, Cambridge International Examiners held an awards presentation ceremony at the Sunway College in Kuala Lumpur for students who achieved excellent results in the country and in the world for the November 2015 Examination.

As Jeremy is pursuing another six-month study course in the German Language at Sprachzentrale (German Language School) located in Leipzig (the largest city in the State of Saxony, Germany), his father received the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards, Malaysia on his behalf from Deputy Minister of Education, Dato' P Kamalanathan.

In July this year, he will sit for the TestDaF, a language examination at an advanced level to test for German proficiency for non-native German speakers, as a prelude to entering university.
