SUKAU: Birds are nature's most fabulous architects. This one for instance, is a massive pendulous weaver nest entered from the top into a nesting chamber at the bottom, hung from a drooping branch. A Sukau wildlife guide said it's the master straw-weaving works of a very tiny bird. ADVERTISEMENT The most surprising part is the parent birds don't seem to worry about any predators, human or otherwise, even though heavy fresh fruit bunch lorries ply the dirt road though the traffic is sparse and far apart. Usually birds do their best to hide their nests for safety but this one stands out as a completely "worry not". On the other hand, this is probably exactly what the 26,102ha Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary means – a refuge of safety from the pursuit or danger. This least expected bird watching experience for Daily Express was IOI gravel road crossing Lot 3 of the Sanctuary on March 3 this year. ADVERTISEMENT As die-hard bird watchers have always said, "Birds can completely astonish you", not just their enormous diversity and beauty but also as ultimate nest builders of equally diverse and ingenious architectural craftsmanship.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

The bonus experience capped a 3km walk through the elephant crossing IOI dirt track marked by big stands of laran trees stacked with an unusual density of no less than 15 Orangutan nests, simply because the red ape loves to eat not just laran fruits but also its bark!

A diversity of people within both government and conservation circles are working to ensure the wildlife sanctuary remains a safe haven for its diverse cargo of animals.
