Fishbombing: Man, son are charged

Kota Kinabalu: A man and his son charged with resorting to fishbombing under an oil rig after illegally entering the restricted area in Kota Belud will go trial on May 17 and June 6 this year.Sessions Court Judge Indra Ayub fixed the date for Shaik Mohd Godian, 67, and his 16-year-old son after both of them maintained their plea of not guilty during case management on Wednesday.On the first count, Shaik and the boy are accused of using fish bombs at 5.47pm on July 28, 2015 at the St Joseph Jacket (G) oil rig belonging to Shell Sdn Bhd which likely could endanger life or damage the company's property.ADVERTISEMENT The offence under Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957 carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine of up to RM10,000 or both on conviction.On the second count they are accused of entering the area without a permit at the same place and time.The offence under Section 7 of the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act 1959 read together under Section 34 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to two years, or a fine of up to RM1,000, or both, on conviction.The duo had claimed trial to the charges against them on Aug 19, 2015 and the court released them on a bail of RM2,500 with RM2,000 deposited in two local sureties each.ADVERTISEMENT Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Khairuddin Idris appeared for the prosecution while counsel Muhamad Amirul Amin who stood in for counsel Erveana Ansari defended Shaik and his son.Meanwhile, a Filipino was jailed four months and ordered given a stroke of the cane for illegal entry.
