Illegal P'pang earth moving: Five excavators seized

Kota Kinabalu: The Land and Survey Department took swift action against illegal earth moving activities in Kg Togudon, Penampang, Wednesday.Its Director Safar Untong said they deployed an enforcement team to the site at 11.30am following numerous complaints from the villagers that extraction of earth and soil had polluted the Moyog River."The villagers claimed that the land owner has been ignoring their pleas to stop the earth moving activities in the village that have been polluting the river and greatly affecting the livelihood of those who are depending on the river as a source of income.

"Hence, an enforcement team from the department was mobilised to the site and seized five Hitachi excavators believed to be used for the illegal activities and detained two workers in the raid," he said on Wednesday.Safar said the Penampang Land Office had confirmed that no licence was issued for such earth moving activities at the site in Kg Togudon, which prompted the department to send the enforcement team to take stern action.During the raid, Safar said there were massive earth moving activities as a result of land clearing and hill cutting activities at the area so as to operate a goose farm at the site.He said any earth moving, extraction and transporting of earth and soil from the land is an offence under the Sabah Land Ordinance Cap 68 if such activities were carried out without a valid licence.
