Semporna: A suspected thief was nabbed after he attempted to ram his car into a police patrol vehicle during a daring bid to avoid arrest at Jalan Kg Lihak-Lihak, here, on Tuesday. The drama unfolded when district police were alerted of a vehicle driven by the 40-year-old suspect headed towards the district from Lahad Datu at about 10.17am. A police car patrolling the area saw a vehicle which was identified to be that of the suspect along Km 40, Jalan Semporna-Kunak and ordered it to stop.ADVERTISEMENT Instead of stopping, the driver accelerated the vehicle to a speed of 160 kilometres per hour, prompting the team to give chase for about 10 to 15 kilometres when the driver suddenly swerved the vehicle towards the patrol car. District Police Chief Supt Peter Umbuas said the team was forced to fire several shots at the vehicle as it accelerated straight for the patrol car. However, it did not stop the vehicle from speeding off. With help from another team, the patrol team managed to trace the vehicle which was abandoned at a plantation area and inspections on the vehicle found three of its tyres punctured believed to be caused by the shooting. An "Ops Kesan" team led by Peter apprehended the suspect at a mangrove area where he had fainted believed due to panic and exhaustion, at about 2.40pm.ADVERTISEMENT Police recovered the Isuzu vehicle, a wig, a hockey stick, bag, wallet, four handphones, a power bank and a note book.
