Kota Kinabalu: The Society of the Blind in Malaysia will be holding a Family Day celebration at Wisma Telipok Ria in Tuaran here on May 2, in conjunction with the Kaamatan Harvest Festival. Its Sabah Chairman Mery Ringegon said the event aims to bring members closer together.

She said two talks would also be held at the event to help raise the knowledge of members on family development, globalisation challenges and parenting.

"The society was established to help introduce and improve policies and implementation of services governing the education, rehabilitation, employment and general welfare of the blind in Sabah," she said.

The Society of Blind Malaysia is a member of the National Council for the Blind Malaysia, a non-governmental, non-profit and tax exempted organisation under the Societies Act.

Traditional sports and singing competition will also be held during the event, she said.

A recognition ceremony will also be held to honour members who excelled in studies, sports and singing last year, including Paralympic gold medallist Felicia Mikat.

A one-off study assistance will also be given to deserving members, said Ringegon.

"Access to education is the right of everyone and that includes assistance in terms of finance to the blind people when they are in need of it to finance their study or schooling," she said.

Towards this end, Ringegon hoped the private sector and the society at large would help to sponsor their activities so more blind people can be assisted.
