Kuching: Election workers are advised to exercise caution when hanging campaign materials on electrical poles. Sarawak Energy Bhd said in a statement here Thursday that such action could result in outages and casualty.

"We have received feedback from our technical team that electricity poles have been used to hang campaign materials," its Distribution Senior Vice President Lau Kim Swee said.

He said the workers risked electrocution and could sustain serious injuries or worse, death if they come too close to the overhead power lines.

Lau warned that SEB personnel would take down banners and buntings without prior notice should the location of display pose a danger to the public.

"Close contact with electrical equipment can also result in a power flashover. In addition to being dangerous, this will cause disruption of supply to customers," he said. He said billboards should not be located anywhere near SEB overhead lines and substations in case of contact during strong winds.

"We need to take these measures very seriously," added Lau.

He said SEB had been giving constant reminders through printed media, radio campaigns, exhibitions, distribution of leaflets, besides organising safety awareness talks at schools to educate the public on the danger. – Bernama
