Kuala Lumpur: The Education Ministry is still waiting for the post-mortem report and result of police investigations into the case of a Year Six pupil who died after she fainted in her classroom last Monday. Its Deputy Minister Chong Sin Woon said the ministry had to wait for the reports before deciding on the next course of action.

"We are still unsure of what happened. The necessary action was taken by the District Education Office by informing the girl's mother after she fainted and subsequently sending her to a nearby clinic," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby.

It was reported that Lyana Shaqirah Amin, 12, a pupil at SK Sungai Pusu in Gombak collapsed after she stood up from her chair to go out during recess.

However, she was pronounced dead at the clinic. Her body was sent to Selayang Hospital for post-mortem.

Chong, however, said the ministry was unsure of when the post-mortem report would be released.

He also explained that the incident was something unexpected and that every school had teachers who were trained and knowledgeable in rendering assistance during emergencies at school, if any.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Education Department director Foziah Buang said schools in the city had been reminded to be extra alert when it came to students with health problems.

Foxiah said headmasters and principals must ensure students' health records under the 3K (Safety, Health and Cheerfulness) programme must be constantly updated to prevent any untoward incidents. – Bernama
