Posing threat to Sabah: Five held
Kuala Lumpur: The Home Ministry's monitoring of possible activities to extend the Sulu sultanate influence in Sabah has led to the arrest of five people, said Deputy Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed (pic). He said they were detained in Sabah for involvement in what is believed to be activities threatening the security and sovereignty of the State.

"We are investigating more people. We are compiling intelligence information in Sabah. We are constantly wary of the activities of this militant group because they have attacked our country," he told the Dewan Negara, Thursday.

He was replying to a supplementary question from Senator Datuk Chin Su Phin who had wanted to know the Government action against attempts to revive the Sulu sultanate in the State.

Nur Jazlan said the Federal Government worked closely with the Sabah intelligence agencies to share information for swift action to be taken. He also said there was cooperation in information-sharing with private agencies, NGOs, political parties and the community to restrict militant activities in Sabah.

Meanwhile, the total number of foreign workers to be brought in will only be known after the completion of the rehiring programme.

Nur Jazlan said the Government must first know the actual number of foreign workers required by the country.

To get this figure, the government must wait for the completion of the rehiring programme in December.

"It's still too early to gauge the ongoing rehiring programme. Through this programme, eligible illegal foreign migrants will be given a work permit while the ineligible ones will be repatriated through the 3+1 programme.

"After we know the number of foreign workers required, then we can decide on whether to bring in more."

He was responding to the question from Senator Mohd Salim Sharif @ Mohd Sharif on the effectiveness of the foreign migrants' legalising programme undertaken by the Government and the number of illegals repatriated.

The programme of rehiring illegals, from Feb 15 until December this year, is to give opportunity to illegal migrants working in Malaysia to obtain a work permit for employment in the sectors permitted to hire them.

Nur Jazlan said so far 40,374 illegals had been repatriated.
