1 dead as Kancil with 8 crashes

Tawau: A man was killed and six were injured, three of them seriously, when a Kancil packed with eight people crashed in front of SMK Kinabutan along Mile 5, Jalan Apas, on Sunday. District Police Chief ACP Fadil Marsus identified the deceased as Sabri Arsi, 26, who succumbed to his injuries at about 10.10pm at his home in Kg Sri Aman near here after he was brought home from the hospital following the 3.55pm mishap. Fadil said seven people inside the vehicle, aged between 14 and 28, were rushed to the Tawau Hospital by fire and rescue as well as ambulance personnel. It is yet to be established if the eighth individual was the driver or a passenger as he fled the scene.

Sherwan Kalim, 22, Alman Arsi, 27 and Azhar Basir, 14, sustained serious injuries, while the other three injured were Nabil Julhadi, 17, Saiful Anggilau, 18 and Ajlusrin, 19.Two of those injured had no documents. Fadil said early investigations at the scene showed that the accident took place when the driver lost control of the Kancil which crashed as it was heading towards Mile 3½ Jalan Apas from Batu Payung. The impact caused the vehicle to hit a divider before crashing into the roadside iron railing.

All those inside the vehicle were thrown out of the vehicle. Fadil said preliminary investigations showed that the accident was due to the driver's negligence.
