Age is only a number for BN's Pelawan candidate Janet Lau

Sibu: Certain quarters have been questioning state Barisan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Adenan Satem for picking Datuk Lau Ung Hie as a BN direct candidate to contest the Pelawan state seat. Some have expressed their dismay on Facebook, claiming at her age she does not have the energy to serve the people and should just stay at home to take care of her grandchildren instead of becoming a candidate in the 11th State Election.

Little do they know that the 69 year-old, fondly known as Janet in this Foochow town of Sibu, is still very energetic despite her age and can put many a youngster to shame.

Prior to this election time, one could stumble upon her at Taman Tasik Sibu at Jalan Permai doing her hash runs and brisk walking.

"Don't I look energetic to you," she asked when met by Bernama at her operation centre in Sungai Merah township, the place where Fuzhou immigrants landed in 1901, before moving to the present Sibu town to help develop the town to what it is today.

Contrary to what certain people have said, she could still meet people all day long and has the energy to do so, thanks to her twice a week hash run and brisk walking.

"I did not start my political work today, or social service today. I started 30 years ago," said the widow of Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew, former Federal Deputy Transport Minister who died of liver cancer in 2010.

"Age is only a number, whether you are 65 or 75, it is only a number. It is how you are thinking, that is most important," she said adding that with positive thinking one can still go on doing his or her work no matter how tired he or she is.

One thing she will not do is to apologise for her age.

"I am not shy to say that I have some age, I am not going to apologise for my age. I'll serve the people.

If I can still do hash runs, I can still do my work to serve the people," she said in a determined voice.

Lau is involved in a three-cornered fight with incumbent David Wong Kee Woan of DAP and STAR's Priscilla Lau who is her niece.

It will not be an easy task to capture Pelawan that has 32,233 registered voters of which 91.2 per cent are Chinese, 4.9 per cent Malay/Melanau, 3.1 per cent Iban and 0.8 per cent others.

Wong prevented Vincent Goh Chung Siong from recapturing the seat for SUPP in the 2011 state election with a 6,391 vote majority.

Being in Adenan's team, Lau hopes there would be a swing in the Chinese votes to BN because Adenan's policies have gained support from the Chinese community and she hoped that could be translated into votes on May 7.

The Apai Besai Menoa Sarawak has implemented policies such as the recognition of the Unified Education Certificate (UEC); support for Chinese independent schools; acknowledgement of the status of the Chinese community in the country; freedom of religion; abolishment of toll and quit rent; reduction in electricity tariff and assessment rates.

Lau aims to help students from families with financial difficulties to further their studies, help children with special needs, set up a centre for retirees and the aged, as well as create job opportunities for the young generation. – Bernama
