Kota Kinabalu: Kabesa Sabah & Labuan or SSEAYP (Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Programme) had its first roadshow during the Armada open day at Sepanggar Naval Base in conjunction with its 82nd Anniversary. The roadshow gave SSEAYP former members to explain to the public the benefit of participating in Japan-based programme to the youth.

According to its organising chairman, D.H. Mil Razali Biok, this programme has been in existence since 1974, however, many members of the public are not aware of it and thus, do not know its objectives and benefits.

"I was a member of SSEAYP in 1999, and I have gained so much experience from the two-month journey with other youth members from other nations. It is a collaboration between Malaysia government and Japan.

"Our main objective is to spread good deeds to the youth who are interested to be part of SSEAYP programme," said Razali as he showed some of the photos collected through former members about their activities on board the Nippon Maru.

This yearly programme gathers selected youths from 11 Asian countries where beneficial activities are conducted on board the Nippon Maru Ship, a 7-storey ship bringing youth to visit all Asian countries and Japan with the purpose of strengthening friendship, creating better bonding, sharing their knowledge and exchanging culture.

Mohd Airy Arin, a former participant of SSEAYP in 1997 was glad to be chosen.

He said the experience and knowledge he gained was priceless and something to remember for a lifetime.

He is attached with the Sabah Port Authority as one of the officers.

"I am happy that I went through this programme and I know every youth who have followed this programme would become a better youth in terms of thinking wise, and with more confidence in facing life challenges," said Airy.

Youths between 18 and 35 are encouraged to check through the website to get more details what SSEAYP is about.

"Just type SSEAYP and a lot of information regarding this programme will be available including the form," said Judith Asong, the secretary of Kabesa Sabah & Labuan and a former participant of SSEAYP in 1995.

The Nippon Maru ship is normally scheduled to begin its journey from end of October till early December every year travelling from one country to another and the last destination is Japan before all participating youth go back to their own countries.
