Man faces 14 counts of misappropriating RM77,260 cheques

Kota Kinabalu: A 29-year-old local was charged in the Magistrate's Court here with 14 counts of dishonestly misappropriating cheques for RM77,260.40.Raj Shariff Benjamin Shah Jr, who appeared before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie, claimed trial to all charges against him.

Raj Shariff was accused of cashing the cheques belonging to SAR Madrasah Islamiah Hikmah for his own use at Bank Islam KK branch in Jalan Perpaduan, here, between Nov 6, 2013 and March 14, 2014.

The first to 14th charge stated that Raj Shariff misappropriated cheques for RM8,175, RM3,570.70, RM4,500, RM10,000, RM8,075, RM8,175, RM4,500, RM2,666.70, RM2,500, RM5,600, RM5,875, RM2,553, RM5,000 and RM6,070, respectively.

Each charge under Section 403 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of between six months and five years and whipping and liability of a fine on conviction.

The court set case management for between June 1 and June 13.

Raj Shariff was offered bail at RM2,500 bail with RM2,000 deposited in two sureties on each charge.

He was not represented. Chief Inspector Lim Swee Beng appeared for the prosecution.
