Team Azzuri clinch Safa Futsal title

Kota Kinabalu: Team Azzuri clinched the title in the inaugural Sabah Football Association (Safa) Futsal League played at the BSA Futsal Centre, Kolombong, Sunday.The team from Kota Kinabalu brushed aside Junior 28 from Sandakan 4-0 in the final to take the RM3,000 cash prize with the losing finalist taking RM1,500.Azlan S was the hero for the champion as he scored a hat trick with the first in the 5th minute in the first half followed by two more in 7th and 9th minute in the second half while the other goal was scored by Sulaiman Umar in the 3rd minute of the second half.

Third place was won by Sri Intan who beat fellow Tawau teammates 4-3 in the play-off to collect the RM800 cash prize.A total of 75 teams took part in the two-day event and the prizes was given away by Sabah Football Association Futsal Committee Member Rusli Hassan.Meanhwile, Safa's Futsal Committee Chairman Yamani Hafez Musa had earlier said he was pleased with the turnout of teams from as far as Tawau, Sandakan and Lahad Datu.He said it was a very positive sign as the tournament was held to develop the sport by providing the platform for players from all over the state to showcase their talents.

He disclosed that a league competition divided into several divisions will be established with the top eight teams from this tournament featured in division one. Also as a step to further improve the standard of the game, starting next year, all team in division one will be to have required coaches with an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) level one coaching certificate, and all the top eight teams are allowed to send one male and one female coach to attend the course which will be held in August.
