Kunak: Parti Keadilan Rakyat's vice branch chief, Djapari Kudosat, claimed that the Tawau prison is severely congested until some of the inmates had no beds to sleep on.He said such treatment is a violation to the rights of the inmates.

"Recently, I received information about the congestion in the Tawau prison. The inmates had to sleep on any available space they could find. We understand that the inmates were to be brought to the court but they still have the right to be given a better place (to sleep on) though it may not be as comfortable as that of a free man," he said.

To ease the congestion, Djapari urged the authorities to speed up the construction of the RM176 million proposed Lahad Datu prison which has the capacity to house 1,000 inmates when completed.

He said the Tawau prison is the only one available in the east coast.

He believed the main cause of the congestion was due to the increase in the number of inmates, especially after the authorities conducted operations to round up illegal immigrants.

"That's why we need the Lahad Datu prison to be hurried up as planned," he added.
