Four probe papers on bosses opened

Alor Setar: Eighteen premises were raided and four investigation papers opened on four employers under Op '1Visit Policy' conducted around Alor Setar today, to detect employers who violated labour laws.The five-hour operation began at 10 am and was carried out around the Mergong Industrial Area and Alor Setar, by 37 officers from the Human Resources Ministry, namely the Manpower Department (Peninsular Malaysia), Human Resources Development Berhad and Social Security Organisation (SOCSO), as well as the Regulatory and Enforcement branch of the ministry.

Kedah Manpower Department director Mohd Nizar Zakaria said of the 18 premises inspected, three were manufacturing companies, seven wholesale and retail companies, seven private recruitment agencies and a health company.

"Among the offences committed by the four employers were, they paid salary in cash without the employees' written request and failing to report foreign workers within 14 days, to grant service contracts to employees and to give salary statements to workers.

"Once the investigations are completed, we will submit the papers to the deputy public prosecutor for further action," he told reporters, here.

Op '1Visit Policy' in Kedah is the continuation of the operation carried out previously in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan and Melaka.

Meanwhile, Mohd Nizar said the Kedah Manpower Department had conducted inspections on 3,050 premises of employers involving various sectors and 525 compliance notices were issued to employers for various offences under the Employment Act.

"A total of 63 investigation papers were opened, of which 30 employers were liable to prosecution and a fine of between RM500 and RM3,000 while 29 employers were fined between RM1,500 and RM3,000.

"From Jan 1 to April this year, 869 premises were checked, 15 investigation papers were opened and 92 compliance notices were issued," he said.– Bernama
