Kota Kinabalu: Parents intending to adopt non-Malaysian children, especially Indonesians and Filipinos, have been advised that the process can be very complicated.According to Suhakam Secretary Aflin Zaim Dino Abdullah, this is because Malaysia upholds a strict system when it comes to matters concerning citizenship.

He said there has been a rise in number of Sabahan parents wanting to adopt children but advised them to adopt local children instead.

"If they want to adopt a child, then adopt a local child. As long as the child is born in Malaysia and one of the parents is a Malaysian, then there's no problem. But it's complicated if they want to adopt a non-Malaysian child," he said in reply to a question by the President of Sabah Human Rights Association, Lee Pun Yee, during the latter's courtesy call on Tuesday.

Lee, on another matter, urged the management of Lintas Heritage Plaza Pristine Development Sdn Bhd to allocate parking spaces for physically-challenged individuals in the area.

"There are clinics and health check-up centres as well as a hemodialysis centre at Lintas Heritage.

Therefore, the area must have special parking lots for physically challenged individuals, senior citizens or those who have difficulty moving," he said.

He also said he received complaints from the public about the expensive parking rates in the area.
