Contracts worth RM64b awarded to Bumi vendor firms under VDP

Kuala Lumpur: Contracts worth RM64.2 billion were awarded to Bumiputera vendor companies from 2013 to 2015 under the Vendor Development Programme (VDP).Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry (Miti), Datuk Ahmad Maslan said in 2015 alone, contracts valued at RM10.9 billion were given to 2,670 Bumiputera vendors from 18 anchor companies."The government hopes that more anchor companies will be involved in the VDP this year," he told a press conference after launching the GLC Explorace 2016 here Thursday.

The one-day event, themed, "Innovation Towards Global Sustainability", was organised by Miti, Sime Darby Bhd and Malaysian Industrial Development Finance Bhd."We hope the event will provide significant exposure and opportunities for Bumiputera entrepreneurs and enhance collaborative networks among business partners," Ahmad said.On an increase in allocation under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP) to Bumiputera vendors, he said it depends on the outcome of other Bumiputera programmes implemented under it."If we find the VDP effective in producing competitive and resilient entrepreneurs for the global arena, it is possible that the government will consider an increase in allocation in future," he added.

Earlier, in his speech, Ahmad Maslan said in 2015, 112 new vendor companies were appointed by eight anchor companies involved in the oil and gas, services, telecommunications and information and communications technology, construction and automotive sectors.

"To date, 833 vendor companies from the 2,760 under the VDP, have created 24,967 job opportunities and achieved sales of RM7.67 billion," Ahmad said. – Bernama
