Too early to talk about reward for Thomas/Uber Cup squads: BAM

Kuala Lumpur: Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) acting president, Tan Sri Mohamed Al-Amin Abdul Majid said it is too early to talk about reward for the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup squads."No need to see it in terms of rewards as it may put pressure on the players. There will be proposals when the time comes."What is important, the players must bear in mind that they carry the hopes of Malaysians," he told reporters after a meet the media sesssion at Juara Stadium, Bukit Kiara, here Tuesday.ADVERTISEMENT The Thomas Cup and Uber Cup tournaments will be held from May 15-22 in Kunshan, China.The Malaysian Thomas Cup squad led by Datuk Lee Chong Wei is drawn in Group C with South Korea, England and Germany.The other members are Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, Chong Wei Feng and Goh Soon Huat (singles) and Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong, Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong and Teo Ee Yi/Ong Yew Sin (doubles).Malaysia emerged runner-up after losing to Japan in the 2014 Thomas Cup finals held in New Delhi, India.ADVERTISEMENT The last time Malaysia won the Thomas Cup was in 1992 in Kuala Lumpur.Malaysia's best showing in the Uber Cup was also in 1992, when the ladies scored their first win in the last group match by beating the Netherlands 4-1.

The Uber Cup squad comprise of Goh Liu Ying (skipper), Tee Jing Yi, Goh Jin Wei, Ho Yen Mei, Sonia Cheah, Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei, Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean and Amelia Anscelly.Malaysia, who has never won the Uber Cup, is in Group A with 13 times champions China, Denmark and Spain.Meanwhile, BAM technical director Morten Frost Hansen said the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup squads blended well during the 10-day closed door training stint at Juara Stadium.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
