Kota Kinabalu: Special Tasks Minister cum Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Teo Chee Kang said the repeated calls by Kalabakan Member of Parliament Datuk Abdul Ghapur Salleh to return the Merotai State seat are nothing constructive but only bring him to ridicule. He said this is because the question of which party is entrusted to stand for Barisan Nasional for the seat would only be decided by the BN leadership itself.

And they comprise leaders from Umno, MCA, MIC and all component parties, including LDP, and is not for him (Abdul Ghapur) to decide, he added.

"The BN leadership will follow the accepted formula in that the present seat allocation shall stay.

"There can only be changes if the component parties concerned reach a consensus to vary the existing seat allocation, otherwise the status quo shall remain," Teo said, referring to the Merotai seat now held by LDP.

Since late April, Abdul Ghapur has demanded the Merotai seat be returned to Umno and on May 11 said Teo was being ridiculous by refusing to return the Merotai state seat to Umno in the 14th general election.

Earlier, a group of Ghapur's supporters held a protest banner which described LDP as "Anak Kecil Main Api (child playing with fire)."

Previously Teo had clarified that the issue of returning the seat to Umno should not have been raised as it was a new seat created during a re-delineation exercise in 2004, and it so happened that LDP had been entrusted the State seat by the BN, and not as alleged by Abdul Ghapur.

"One will only resort to airing his grievances through the media if he doesn't have the avenue to channel it to the party leadership.

"As a veteran leader, I am sure that Datuk Seri Ghapur has that access. There is no need to act like a child crying for milk in public. What I am saying is that there is a proper channel through which issues can be brought up and resolved within BN," he added.
