Kota Kinabalu: Bank Negara Malaysia, with the help of the Welfare Department, will be distributing a device called Ringgit Cash Test Cards, to allow the visually impaired to identify the denominations on banknotes and coins soon. The credit-card sized device made out of plastic is designed with braille markings as well as tactile symbols to denote the denominations.

The device was unveiled here on Friday at the BNM Regional Office during an OKU (individuals with disability) awareness programme for banks and insurance companies.

A statement released by the regulator said the programme was held to enhance the awareness of staff from various banks and insurance companies on the needs of the people with disabilities.

It said the programme is a continuation of BNM's initiative on the nationwide OKU Awareness Programme which was launched by Assistant Governor, Abu Hassan Alshari Yahaya, recently.

This event, organised in collaboration with the Welfare Department, promoted the need for such companies to provide disabled-friendly facilities and services.
