Kuching: All three of the Sarawak Deputy Chief Ministers who took their oath of office Friday afternoon have pledged to join forces to assist Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem in developing the State, in line with Barisan Nasional's manifesto for the 11th Sarawak state election which concluded on Saturday. Parti Pesaka Bunmiputera Bersatu (PBB) Deputy President Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said he had a long and close relationship with Adenan and vowed to stand by the Chief Minister to make Sarawak a state which developed well and in an organised manner within the framework of the Malaysian constitution.

Thanking Adenan for appointing him to the post of Deputy Chief Minister, he said he would never betray the trust given to him.

Abang Johari, who was also put in charge of the Ministry of Housing and Urbanisation as well Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, said he saw both ministries as important in developing the State's economy.

Commenting on the State Cabinet, Abang Johari said it was a strong combination of experienced veterans as well as new faces, and those with good networks with federal leaders.

Meanwhile, former Sarawak Land Development Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing said he viewed his appointment as Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Infrastructure Development and Transport as a continuation of his responsibilities.

Thanking Adenan for his trust in appointing him as Deputy Chief Minister, he said his focus now was to build access links to rural areas, especially the remotest places.

He said without access to good communication links, these areas could not be developed and as the former Land Development Minister, he knew and really understood these areas that would be his focus.

Commenting on the composition of the Sarawak Cabinet, the President of Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) said he would see to it that the State Government was sensitive to the need to involve all races in the administration.

Meanwhile, Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said his appointment as one of the Deputy Chief Ministers would ensure Adenan's agenda and programmes as set out in the manifesto was be carried out.

"It will be a heavier responsibility for me. I will try my best to perform well," he told reporters.

On his portfolio – State Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture and Rural Economy – Uggah said his top priority was to modernise the State's agriculture and raise farmers income to RM4,000 per month by 2020.

He said agriculture is one of the most important contributors to State's export revenue and programme to eradicate poverty.

"The new portfolio is very interesting. We don't have land development anymore and it will be incorporated into my portfolio. We must modernise agriculture an build up the supply chain," he said.

"We must create supply mechanisms to bring our product from farm to table. Then, the farmers across the state can raise their income to at least RM4,000 per month," he added.
