Educationist dies 12 days after freak mishap
PETALING JAYA: The senior citizen who accidentally drove into a 15m-deep construction shaft along Jalan Universiti here nearly a fortnight ago has died.Yong Chee Seng, 86, was admitted to University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) for treatment after the accident and was discharged a few days later.

However, his family declined to say whether his death, at a hospital, was related to the accident.

"We appeal to people to stop speculating whether this is related to the accident," said the youngest son, Yong Hon Cheong.

"We would be happy if he is remembered as an educationist," he added.

On May 3, Yong crashed through some plastic safety barriers and his car plunged into the shaft, which had been dug for underground sewerage works.

Yong and a passenger, believed to be a foreign maid, were lifted out together with the car wreckage and sent to UMMC for treatment.

A member of the Trinity Methodist Church here, Yong was well-known in the education fraternity as he was the principal of the Methodist Boys' Secondary School Kuala Lumpur (MBSSKL) from 1979 to 1985.

He started his teaching career at the Methodist English School in Tanjung Malim, Perak, in 1950.

He retired as the education secretary of the Methodist Board of Education in 1995.

In 2009, MBSSKL renamed its West Wing after Yong in honour of his contributions to the school as wider society.

Yong was also hailed as a model of active ageing, as he was still on many committees and organisations after his retirement. For example, he still chaired the Kurnia Dialysis Centre's fund-raising committee in 2004, at the age of 74.
