SEGAMAT: The Johor Health Department has been asked to increase public awareness campaigns about the dangers of the Zika virus and control of Aedes mosquito breeding grounds, as the state recorded the highest number of dengue cases.Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the move was to ensure the people were aware of Zika symptoms and do screening if they had the symptoms.

"Everyday thousands of people commute from Johor to Singapore. It is not easy to control health matters at the country's entry points in the state.

"Therefore, they must be very careful and must be aware of Zika's symptoms," he told reporters when met at Pasar Tani Taman Yayasan here today in conjunction with Kembara Mahkota Johor expedition .

Dr Subramaniam who was commenting on the Zika Virus case that was reported in Singapore last Friday also said that the republic had already taken precautionary measures.

"Any further information we can only get in two to three more weeks to determine whether the patient was in contact with any others before being hospitalised," he said.

Dr Subaramaniam also advises the public to wear long-sleeved shirts and apply insect repellents to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

Yesterday, Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said without early prevention, Malaysia was also at risk if its people visited the affected nations.

He said a total of 472 samples were tested by the National Public Health Laboratory and the Institute of Medical Research, but the (Zika) virus was not detected in the country as of May 12. – Bernama
