Miri car free day on Sunday

MIRI: Miri City Council will kick-off its pilot project "Car Free Day Campaign, Green Ride 2016" on Sunday to encourage a healthy lifestyle and reduce carbon emission.Miri City Mayor Lawrence Lai Son Yew said Marina Bay Miri has been picked as the venue for the campaign with a five-hour road closure from 6am to 11am with more than 1,000 participants expected to take part.

"If the response is good on Sunday, we will organise a similar monthly campaign starting from June 2016," he told reporters here Wednesday

Lai said, the campaign would be held once a month on Sunday with various activities related to environmental and health to create awareness on the dangers of carbon emission from vehicles.

He said all are welcome to participate in the campaign but only 1,000 registered participants would receive goodies from the organiser.

"For this Sunday there will be activities like cycling, walking, aerobics, Zumba and jogging," he said adding that those interested can fill simple online registration forms available at.

On another development, Lai said for the first time ever Sarawak has been given the honour to host the national Local Council Consultation Committee Meeting from May 22 to 24 in Miri City.

He said representatives from 150 local councils nationwide would attend the meeting that will also be attended by Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan. – Bernama.
