Kuala Lumpur: Arul Kanda Kandasamy today said recent developments surrounding 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) meant he could no longer honour his agreement to publicly debate DAP MP Tony Pua.The 1MDB president said that since his acceptance of Pua's challenge in April, the state investment firm has become the subject of a police investigation based on the Public Accounts Committee report.

It was also embroiled in a dispute with the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) over US$3.5 billion (RM14.2 billion) in payments the Abu Dhabi sovereign fund said it never received from 1MDB.

"I am now fully focused on assisting PDRM, and resolving the IPIC dispute. As such I cannot engage in a debate which may prejudice 1MDB's legal position in relation to the investigation and the dispute.

Pua earlier announced Arul Kanda has agreed to a public debate on controversies surrounding the state investment firm, and both sides were working to have the event televised.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia previously blocked the debate, citing the PAC's previous investigation on the firm.

The PAC has since completed its probe and tabled its final report in the Dewan Rakyat in March.
