SUBANG JAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad alleged the Malay Rulers are being prevented from granting him audiences to deliver his so-called "Citizens Declaration" seeking the Prime Minister's resignation. In a forum here, the former Prime Minister claimed this was why he has been unsuccessful in meeting the Yang diPertuan Agong to deliver the memorandum bearing over a million signatures.

"I have been trying to see them to show the Declaration by the people, but so far, I can't get an appointment which means the Rulers are confined to their palaces," he said.

He did not provide any evidence to support his allegation save his inability to obtain an audience with any Malay Ruler.

Dr Mahathir last week said the movement has collected 1.27 million signatures in support of its demand for Datuk Seri Najib Razak to step down as Prime Minister.

The former Prime Minister said then he will seek an audience with the Agong in order to deliver the memorandum.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir has remained coy on suggestions to restore the power of the monarchy, which he was responsible for curbing during his tenure as Prime Minister.

Responding to calls from Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar to rectify the amendments, which had reduced the Rulers' immunity, Dr Mahathir said it was entirely up to the Federal Government.

"It is up to the Government to take whatever action they think is fit," he said.

The former Premier was asked if he would change his stance against Rulers now that he is seeking their backing for the Citizens' Declaration movement.

Sultan Ibrahim had said in a royal address last week that the Federal Constitution amendments in 1992 to reduce the immunity of the Rulers was done for political and individual interests.

He said it was improper to limit the powers of the King or Sultan in giving their royal assent for bills and legislations passed in Parliament.
