Kuching: Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem on Thursday said he has no intention to amend the Sarawak Constitution to cater for more ministries. Adenan explained that the current 11 ministries were sufficient for the State's needs.

"If there is a necessity and under special circumstances, especially with the increase in the number of State Assembly seats from 71 to 82, we might. But not at the present moment," he told reporters after announcing the portfolios for the newly sworn-in 18 Assistant Ministers, here, Thursday (See another report on Page 9).

Adenan was responding to a recent statement by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that Sarawak might amend its constitution to allow for more than three Deputy Chief Ministers.

He also said all Ministers, Assistant Ministers and assemblymen of the Barisan Nasional in the State will have to submit a report based on what they had done to him every six months.

Adenan said this was like their Key Performance Index (KPI) and he would be reading them.

"They must perform. I will be reading the reports and those who did not perform will, for a start, get a reminder to buck up," he told a media conference at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here after chairing his first Cabinet meeting following the May 7 state election, which saw the BN winning 72 out of 82 seats.

He also announced the portfolios of the 18 Assistant Ministers, who had been sworn in before the head of State Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud earlier Thursday.

The new faces are Dr Annuar Rapa'ee (Nangka Assemblyman), a cardiologist by training, who has been appointed the Assistant Minister for Science Research and Biotechnology, Malcolm Mussem (Batang Ai) as Assistant Minister for Agriculture, and Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil (Marudi) as Assistant Minister for Local Government.

Others are Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail (Bukit Kota) as Assistant Minister for Welfare and Community Wellbeing, Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn (Tarat) as Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Water Supply).

The Assemblyman for Pantai Damai Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi was appointed as the Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications) and Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali (Samariang) as the Assistant Minister for Early Childhood Education and Family Development.

Another newcomer Datuk Gerawat Gala (Mulu) has been named as the Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly.

Re-appointed as Assistant Ministers are Datuk John Sikie Tayai (Kakus) as the Assistant Minister for Native Laws and Customs, Datuk Len Talif Salleh (Kuala Rajang) as Assistant Minister of Workforce Development and Training and Assistant Minister of Environment and Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais (Gedong) as Assistant Minister of Resource Planning.

Adenan described his Cabinet line-up as very strong and consisting of "people who are prepare to serve, qualified to serve and have a proven record."
