Kota Kinabalu: Some 29 special needs students of Matahari Intervention Centre in Luyang here, received a pleasant visit from the city police in conjunction with the 209th Police Day celebration, on Thursday. The students, aged between four and 23, were presented with toys, colouring materials and recycled goods for art and craft purposes.

"This is part of our corporate social responsibility to the community, especially towards those with special needs," said Deputy City Police Chief Supt Mohd Azhar Hamin who led the police team.

"Being in the police force, does not mean we only focus on crime, because we also look into social issues," he explained.

Also present were about 20 Kota Kinabalu Perkep members led by its Chairwoman ASP Vyetty Thomas Tajal.

The centre, which operates from 8am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays, is a project under the Persatuan Harapan Orang Kelainan Upaya Dalam Pendidikan Sabah (Persatuan Hope Sabah) which began operations in April 2010.

Its Coordinator Nellieziana Fred Judin said the day-care centre was set up with the purpose of providing basic learning skills for those with special needs.

"We provide working skills for adults, who knows, maybe someday they can work outside," she said, adding that they also plan to set up a centre where these adults with special needs can work.

She said most of the students who enrol in the centre are those with autism, adding that they have another centre in Keningau.

"What our centre needs most are toys for the students, recycled items which are used for art and craft," she said, adding that monthly contribution received from parents is between RM250 and RM450.

Those who wish to contribute or learn more about the centre may contact their Luyang branch at 088 – 253824 or 019 840 3957 and Keningau branch at 087-344 105 or 013 818 7806.

Meanwhile, Mohd Azhar and his team also paid a visit to thalassemia patients at the hospital.

Also present were his Criminal Investigation Department Chief DSP Azizul Zulkifli and Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division Chief DSP Kalsom Idris among others.
