Kuching: It is the nature of hydropower development that there will be some costs that cannot not be accurately priced at the beginning of its construction such as in the Murum hydropower dam.Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) Corporate Communication Department manager Ahadiah Zamhari said instead such costs were treated as provisional, with the final cost being determined by the physical conditions actually encountered at the site.

"In the case of Murum hydropower dam, these provisional costs are expected and planned for from the beginning," she said when responding to the suggestion of "additional costs" in the First Series of the A-G's Report 2015 on the dam, which was released recently.

The report had stated that the Murum dam cost the state RM2.98 billion or RM530 million more than the original cost.

SEB team, according to Ahadiah, was able to negotiate a contract which meant that these uncertainties were managed in a way which delivered a very cost effective result.

"SEB will always do its best for the people of Sarawak and it welcomes the opportunity to learn more with a view to self improve further in future.

"We look forward to apply the lessons learnt in future projects," she said.

Meanwhile SEB, she added, welcomed the Auditor General's endorsement of its management of the Murum dam. – Bernama
