Fisherman gets five years, two strokes for having machete

Kota Kinabalu: A 51-year-old fisherman was on Friday jailed five years and ordered given two strokes of the cane for having a machete in public.Ahmad Mulia admitted before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to having the 47cm-long machete on April 22 at 2.15pm at Kg Sembulan Lama.Prosecuting officer Chief Inspector Lim Swee Beng, told the court that Ahmad was detained by beat policemen after the weapon was found on him.ADVERTISEMENT Ahmad confessed that he carried the weapon for self-defence and that he brought it along to search for his wife and children who had left him.The court was also informed that Ahmad had one conviction record on drug-related offence and had been jailed twice.Ahmad had committed an offence under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons (Amended) Act 2014 which carries a jail term of between five years and 10 years and whipping on conviction.In another case, five men were sentenced to six months' each for taking drugs.ADVERTISEMENT Godfrey Joseph, Mohd Samat, Mohd Zilnas, Mohd Asri and Syahrul Azwan committed the offence at separate locations here, early this year.Meanwhile, a 19-year-old jobless man claimed trial to having a stolen van.

The court set June 21 for pre-trial case management and released Roberto on a bail of RM3,000 in two sureties.Inspector Isfandiar Jasdi prosecuted while Roberto was represented by counsel Ram Singh.
