China beat S Korea to clinch 10th title

KUNSHAN: China retained the Uber Cup in convincing style by beating arch rivals South Korea 3-1 at Kunshan Sports Centre, here, Saturday.Olympic champion Li Xuerui gave China a flying start by beating Sung Ji Hyun 14-21, 21-13, 21-10 in the women's first singles.

South Korea levelled the score at 1-1 after their doubles pair of Jung Kyung Eun/Shin Seung Chan beat Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei 21-16, 17-21, 23-25.

Second singles player Wang Shixian came on court to produce a sizzling display to put China 2-1 up after beating Kim Hyo Min 21-13, 21-12.

China's scratched doubles pair of Chen Qingchen/Tang Yuanting wrapped up the game with the winning point after disposed Chang Ye Na/Lee So Hee 21-14, 21-16.

"They played the perfect game which is the best ever in the Uber Cup competition. We should have won 3-0.

"With the loss by the first doubles, the second doubles can display their performance to the world.

"I am very happy to see this young pair take their responsibility to deliver the winning point in this crucial time.

"It is most important that they have a good mental strength and produce good results," said China's head coach Li Yongbo in a press conference, here today.

With the victory, China won their 10th Uber Cup title, overcame their men's team frustration who lost 1-3 to South Korea in the Thomas Cup quarter-final.-Bernama
